Data on Social Capital
People doing research on social capital might be interested in certain datasets and survey series archived at the Finnish Social Science Data Archive (FSD). This web page presents relevant FSD datasets and survey series exploring the following topics:

All quantitative datasets archived at the FSD have study descriptions in English. More detailed information on the variables of each dataset can be found in the codebooks attached to each survey. However, there are codebooks in English only for those datasets which have already been translated into English. More datasets are translated on request.

EVA Surveys on Finnish Values and Attitudes
The biennial EVA surveys focus on Finnish societal attitudes, values and perceptions of the present and the future. Themes covered include democracy, market economy, welfare, environment, politics, economic depression, economic growth, Finnish identity, and views of the future.

Finnish Local Government 2004
The research programme Finnish Local Government 2004 was a joint programme launched by the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities, universities and research centres. The project engaged in a systematic and comparable analysis of the development of the municipal sector in 1995-2004. The 47 municipalities participating in the programme were representative of the Finnish local government sector. The study programme comprised of 14 research modules. For most modules, data were collected through mail surveys. The data may be used for cross-sectional or time series analysis.
Research topics in the Family Barometers series have included assistance between the different generations, sufficiency of public support and services, the division of domestic responsibilities, work-life balance, parenting, child-rearing, and children's pastimes and hobbies.

Police Barometers are conducted by the Police Department of the Finnish Ministry of the Interior. The respondents (Finnish people aged over 15) give their opinions on the role, activities, and services of the police. Citizens' fears, crime risk, and attitudes towards national security are also covered. FSD collections cover data from 1999.

Finnish Voter Barometers
Survey themes in Finnish Voter Barometers include voting behaviour, opinions on the government and political parties, and attitudes towards national political issues. In addition, respondents' economic expectations and political participation have often been studied, as well as their opinions on local politics. Background variables have often included the social class of the respondent and the household head, economic activity of the household head, respondent's education, age, mother tongue, sex, party membership, political views, trade union membership and family's annual income.

Regional Differences in the Information Society 2001
The themes in the survey included media literacy, and the use and effects of different media in communication and social relations.
Information Society, Information Work and Changes in the Occupational Structure 2000
The study surveyed the nature of Finnish work, and work-related use of information technology. Some questions pertained to leisure, the importance of various domains of life (e.g. employment, family, leisure), and societal attitudes. The data were collected by the Department of Sociology and Social Psychology at the University of Tampere. The survey contained several variables that have been used in previous studies: Change in Occupational Structure and Social Status in Finland 1988, Change in Occupational Structure and Social Status in Finland 1994 and Social Change in Baltic Countries 1993.
Scandinavian Welfare Survey 1972
The survey is a classic in its field, and offers a long-term perspective to 21st century research. The topics investigated included living standards, loyalties, experiences of self-realisation, alienation, happiness and dissatisfaction.

Eurobarometers are financed by the European Commission and are carried out simultaneously in the European Union member countries. The surveys study the social and political opinions of persons living in the member countries. Eurobarometers offer multifaceted information for researching social capital with their diverse topics.

European Social Survey (ESS)
European Social Survey (ESS) is a cross-national comparative survey covering over 20 nations. The ESS data are collected by face-to-face interviews every other year. Topics include current social questions such as the respondents' social position, social networks and social constructions.

International Social Survey Programme (ISSP)
The ISSP data collection started in 1985 and presently covers about 40 countries. Finland became a member of ISSP in 2000. For instance:

European Values Study (EVS) and World Values Survey (WVS)
The EVS and WVS data study citizen activities, attitudes, and basic values in different countries with integrated, structured surveys. The surveys have been carried out in altogether five waves: 1981-1984, 1989-1993, 1995-1997, 1999-2000 and 2005-2006. The variables chart, for example, the importance of various domains of life (e.g. family, work, leisure time), voluntary organisations or communities, working life, religious attitudes, attitudes towards unemployment and work, and confidence in various institutions in society.
