Many datasets archived at the FSD are applicable to studying work and working life, and the purpose of this web page is to present some of them. There are some datasets concentrating exclusively on working life and several datasets where the topic is touched upon in relation to another theme. The data presented cover a wide range of issues such as working conditions, unemployment, work-life balance, gender equality, correspondence between work and education, and changes in working life.

All quantitative datasets archived at the FSD have study descriptions in English. More detailed information on the variables of each dataset can be found in the codebooks attached to each survey. However, there are codebooks in English only for those datasets which have already been translated into English. More datasets are translated on request.

The data archived at the FSD are freely available for research and teaching purposes. More information on how to order data.

International survey series

International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) currently involves 40+ countries. Working conditions and attitudes towards work were charted in 2005, whereas in 2002 the survey focused on work, family, and housework. The data collected from Finns are also available as separate datasets:
» FSD2133 ISSP 2005 : Work Orientations III : Finnish Data
» FSD0119 ISSP 2002 : Family and Changing Gender Roles III : Finnish Data

European Social Survey (ESS) is a biennial multi-country survey series which collects comparable data from over 20 nations. The 2006 survey includes several questions on working life.

Eurobarometers chart the EU citizens' social and political attitudes. The surveys have included topics related to working life in several years. Please see GESIS website for more information.

Flash Eurobarometers are small scale surveys that supplement standard Eurobarometers. Entrepreneurship has been one of the themes in the survey series since 2000. The respondents' opinions have been charted on entrepreneurship, its risks, and willingness to become an entrepreneur. Please see GESIS website for further information.

World Values Survey (WVS) series charts citizen activities and social values and attitudes with integrated, structured surveys. WVS data have been collected in five waves since 1981, and Finland has participated in the data collection from the very beginning. The surveys have charted the importance of various aspects of life, such as family, work and leisure in a diverse manner. See for example:

Register Data on Vacancies Notified to Public Employment Service contains information on open vacancies, employers, and the process of filling the vacancies. The Ministry of Employment and the Economy produces a new dataset each spring.

The respondents have for example told which factors have hindered or prevented them from finding a job, and which factors have been most important in obtaining a job commensurate with their qualifications.

Finnish Youth Surveys include variables related to young people and working life. Employment questions have been widely studied for instance in the 2007 survey: FSD2293 Finnish Youth Survey 2007.
