The survey of alcohol use was conducted by the weekly supplement NYT of the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat in 2002. It was directed to all readers of the newspaper aged 18 or over. The data contain the structured parts of the survey. The number of respondents was 4542. Respondents were asked at what age they had been drunk for the first time and what had happened on that occasion. Questions covered respondents' current drinking habits, how often they were drunk, where and with whom. Favourite drink (beer, wine, cider, liquor, punch etc) and drug use were also studied. Respondents were asked what was the most pleasant and unpleasant in being intoxicated.

Background variables included the respondent's age, sex, occupation and the drinking habits of the parents.
