Abstract

The survey studied how well the 15 years age limit is controlled in Finnish gambling venues by means of test shopping. The term gambling is used here as an umbrella term for lotteries, slot machines, and the pools. The respondents were observers, who were instructed to monitor young gamblers in a certain venue, after which they responded to a set of questions.

Some questions pertained to whether gamblers who were or seemed to be under 15 years old were asked about their age, and whether they were not allowed to gamble or play. If they were not allowed to gamble or play, the respondents were asked who intervened first, and who forbade them to gamble.

Further questions covered the different gambling games the observed young gamblers played. Finally, the respondents were asked whether the staff in the gambling venue had direct eye contact with gaming machines.

Background variables included respondent's age, gender, time and date of test shopping, duration of interview, and region (NUTS3) and province of gambling venue.
