The data are part of the longitudinal cohort study GOAL (Good Ageing in Lahti Region) 2002-2012. The study concentrated on the health and well-being of the ageing population in the Päijät-Häme region of Finland. This dataset consists of the first wave data. Data were collected with the help of questionnaires and clinical and laboratory measurements. The participants received the first questionnaire and the invitation to the clinical tests by post and and filled in the second questionnaire when being tested.
The questionnaires covered the respondent's housing, places of residence during lifetime, childhood circumstances, functional ability, psychosocial and physical health, health risks, eating and exercise habits, smoking and alcohol use, use of health services, social networks and support, need for help, helping others, free-time habits, aging experiences and future expectations. Clinical measurements measured weight, height, waist circumference, blood pressure. Laboratory tests measured lipids, glucose and insulin.
Background variables included the respondent's municipality type, gender, year of birth, number and ages of children, marital status, education, economic activity and occupational status, and household income. The year 2002 study also contained a number of questions on R's spouse and near relatives.
Participants can be identified over waves using the variable 'havtun'.
