Abstract
The data are part of the longitudinal cohort study GOAL (Good Ageing in Lahti Region) 2002-2012. The study concentrated on the health and well-being of the ageing population in the Päijät-Häme region of Finland. This dataset consists of the first wave data. Data were collected with the help of questionnaires and clinical and laboratory measurements. The participants received the first questionnaire and the invitation to the clinical tests by post and and filled in the second questionnaire when being tested.
The questionnaires covered the respondent's housing, places of residence during lifetime, childhood circumstances, functional ability, psychosocial and physical health, health risks, eating and exercise habits, smoking and alcohol use, use of health services, social networks and support, need for help, helping others, free-time habits, aging experiences and future expectations. Clinical measurements measured weight, height, waist circumference, blood pressure. Laboratory tests measured lipids, glucose and insulin.
Background variables included the respondent's municipality type, gender, year of birth, number and ages of children, marital status, education, economic activity and occupational status, and household income. The year 2002 study also contained a number of questions on R's spouse and near relatives.
Participants can be identified over waves using the variable 'havtun'.

Restrictions
Open-ended responses (available mostly only in Finnish) have been anonymised. The variable identifying the respondents' municipality of residendce has been removed and a municipality type variable added (the city of Lahti, municipalities surrounding Lahti, and fringe area municipalities). Municipality of birth has been replaced by a statistical municipality group (urban, semi-urban, rural) in those cases where R had reported having lived in the same municipality all his/her life.
Access to the data granted for scientific and thesis purposes. FSD's access application procedure. Restricted access.

Sampling Procedure
Stratified quota sampling. All 14 member municipalities of the Päijät-Häme hospital district were given a quota for sampled persons, as the researchers wanted to include a large enough number of inhabitants also from smaller municipalities. The total quota of each municipality was then divided into six equal size strata formed on the basis of gender and birth year cohort. Thus, the sampling frame consisted of 84 strata: 14 (municipalities) x 2 (gender) x 3 (birth year cohorts).
For the year 2002 study, 4,272 persons were sampled from the following municipalities: Artjärvi, Asikkala, Hartola, Heinola, Hollola, Hämeenkoski, Iitti, Kärkölä, Lahti, Nastola, Orimattila, Padasjoki, Pukkila and Sysmä. The final sample consisted of 1,424 persons in each five-year age cohort, half of whom were men and half women.
