Availability:PDF (1,82 MB)
Abstract: The OECD recently published its guidelines for access to research data from public funding. Motivated by the OECD guidelines, FSD conducted an Internet survey on the preservation and reuse of research data in Finnish universities, targeting humanities, social sciences and behavioural sciences. The report is based on the results of the survey and reveals what Finnish researchers, universities, research institutes and funders think of the issues raised by the OECD. The results indicate that while attitudes towards data sharing are positive, insufficient documentation of data, lack of informed consent from participants, confidentiality issues, and technological and ethical problems may form barriers to reuse. Only a small minority of university departments have established a strategy on data preservation.

[Religion, Values and Institutions. Finns in World Values Surveys 1981 - 2005.]
Availability:PDF (0,59 MB)
Abstract: There have been considerable changes in Finnish attitudes since the 1980s. Global and national values have been losing their importance while individual values have become more important. Nevertheless, Finns still display considerable trust in their major institutions - including the church, the police, the Finnish Defence Forces and the judicial system of Finland. The publication concentrates on religion, values and institutions in Finnish life, and is based on the World Value Survey data collected during 1981-2005. The data allow an unique opportunity to study how Finnish values have changed over time and how they compare internationally.

Publications on data archiving and related issues

Arja Kuula (2011). Un nouveau regard sur l'éthique. Working paper. FSD, Université de Tampere.
Availability:PDF in French (0,08 MB)
Abstract: Researchers often justify their negative attitude towards archiving data by referring to a desire to protect research subjects. This working paper takes another point of view on the ethics of archiving data by looking at how research subjects themselves view archiving and the relatiosnship with the researcher. Research subjects tend to value archiving and ensuring further use of data more than researchers do.
