Call for Workshops

The 35th Annual International Association for Social Science Information Service and Technology (IASSIST) conference will be held in collaboration with the International Federation of Data Organizations for the Social Science (IFDO). Hosted by the Finnish Social Science Data Archive and the University of Tampere, IASSIST/IFDO 2009 will take place in Tampere, Finland, 26-29 May, 2009.

Proposals for workshops to be held at the 35th IASSIST conference should be submitted by November 21, 2008.

Workshop Details:

The conference committee seeks workshops that highlight this year's theme of "Mobile Data and the Life Cycle."

Topics of particular interest include:

  • Life cycle models for managing data
  • Infrastructure for data collection, access and preservation
  • Applying metadata standards for data
  • Integrating data services into the social science research process
  • International comparative data for topics such as health, crime, energy, environment, international development, etc.
  • Sharing data across applications
  • Integrating the mobile community
  • Social networking and data
  • Barriers to data sharing and strengthening the reception for data sharing
  • Reaching new populations through data services
  • Data services in virtual spaces
  • E-science, cyber infrastructure and open data
  • New data partnerships in knowledge communities

Remember popular workshop topics also include:

  • Statistical Literacy
  • Statistical and/or GIS Software use

Successful workshop proposals will blend lecture and hands-on instruction. The conference planning committee will provide the necessary classroom space and computing supplies for all workshops. For previous examples of IASSIST workshops, please see the program of 2008 conference.

We will also be continuing to offer both half-day (3hr) workshops and the shorter workshop format introduced last year. Please consider submitting proposals for either a half-day workshop or a 1.5-2hrs workshop.

The Conference Program Committee will send notification of the acceptance of proposals on or before January 16, 2009.
