Book on Finnish Democracy IndicatorsAn article collection edited by Sami Borg was published in March 2006. The book is connected with a project which aims to define appropriate national indicators for evaluating democratic development in Finland. It is part of the Citizen Participation Policy Programme of the Finnish Government. It is led by the Ministry of Justice and coordinated by FSD. The project has so far resulted in proposals for indicators of Finnish democracy. Problems with data collection have been charted, and recommendations for systematic and purposeful collection of survey data have been made. A group of twelve researchers from different universities and fields was gathered for the project. The members of the group are Sami Borg, Kimmo Grönlund, Voitto Helander, Villiina Hellsten, Lauri Karvonen, Tom Moring, Hannu Nieminen, Heikki Paloheimo, Ossi Piironen, Sari Pikkala, Maija Setälä and Sakari Suutarinen. The writers describe present indicators and their shortcomings in the articles. They also suggest how these indicators and data collection should be developed. The project is to be continued.
