Problems in WVS 3rd wave Finnish data (ICPSR2790)

Cross-checking the data ICPSR2790 against the Finnish data from the year 1996 (FSD0153, the "original" data in Finnish from Gallup Finland) revealed some problems. Some of the problems may relate to the 1st and 2nd wave Finnish data as well, but since we have not got these datasets in Finnish we have not been able to cross-check them.

The problems seem to fall into three categories:

1. Some values labels in the Finnish 3rd wave data in ICPSR2790 seem to beincorrect
   • Variables v88, v95, v96, v97, v116, and v178: codes 2 and 3 are reversed. Details.
   • Variables v221 and v224: incorrect value labels for codes 8-13. Details.
   • Variable v228: incorrect value labels. Details.
2. The frequencies of some variables differ between ICPSR2790 and FSD0153
   • Minor differencies in frequencies : V26, V74, V105, V107, V109, V151, V204, V216. Details.
   • Differencies in frequencies : V218. Details.
3. Lack of documentation in ICPSR2790
   • Lacking documentation : V56. Details.
   • Lacking documentation : V179. Details.
   • Lacking documentation : V206. Details.
   • Lacking documentation : V209. Details.

Furthermore, we are aware of two other deficiences regarding Finnish data:

• Finnish 1st wave data: V215 and V216 missing.
• Finnish 2nd wave data: V221 gets only one value (10=farmer).

Reversed value labels : V88, V95, V96, V97, V116, and V178

In variables V88, V95, V96, V97, V116, and V178, codes 2 and 3 are reversed. The frequencies for Finland in ICPSR2790 make no sense. Below the frequencies from ICPSR2790 (left) and FSD0153 (right). Our translations of the Finnish lables in CAPITAL.

Incorrect value labels : V221 and V224

In ICPSR2790, V221 and V224: codes 8-13 have incorrect value labels ("semi-skl" not an option in Finnish data). Correct labels for Finland:

Variable V228 : For some reason the Finnish questionnaire had 5 options.

We do have towns with population over 50000. Unfortunately we were not able to cross-check this variable since the Finnish data FSD0153 did not contain this variable.

Minor differencies in frequencies : V26, V74, V105, V107, V109, V151, V204, V216

Frequencies for the following variables differ between the two data files, but only slightly (perhaps due to some filters):

• V26 import child qual 2
• V74 important in job 2
• V105 nations goals(1)-2
• V107 nations goals(2)-2
