FSD Charts Research on Citizen Participation

The Ministry of Justice has commissioned FSD to chart research on citizen participation in Finland and to find out what kind of research is needed. The project is connected to the Civil Participation Policy Programme of the Finnish Government.

A report charting major data providers and their recently completed, ongoing or planned research activities will be completed in the autumn. The report will be edited by FSD's director Sami Borg with the help of FSD staff. The research community participated by giving information of their own projects and publications.

Five articles will be included in the report, providing five experts' point of view on the current state of citizen participation research. The conclusions of the seminar mentioned below will be included in the report.

Seminar on Citizen Participation Research in Tampere

FSD held a seminar on citizen participation research on 17 September 2004. The aim was to chart ongoing or completed research on the subject and find out what kind of research is needed. Over 70 experts from different parts of Finland attended.

The most important part of the seminar consisted of work groups where delegates gave short presentations of their own research projects and discussed what kind of research would be needed. As a starting point, they had received a preliminary version of the report on the existing research on this subject, prepared by Sami Borg. The conclusions of the seminar will be added to the final report which will be presented to the Ministry of Justice later in the autumn.

Comparative Analysis of Citizen Participation

FSD is carrying out a comparative analysis of the political and social participation of the Finns, and of their social orientation and connectedness. The report will be based mainly on the European Social Survey data collected in 2002. Other recent international survey data will be used to some extent.

The report will compare the situation in Finland to that of other European countries, and especially to other Nordic countries. Current trends in civic engagement in Finland, and strengths and weaknesses in relation to other countries will be examined. The report has been commissioned by the Ministry of Justice and is connected to the Civil Participation Policy Programme. It will be written by director Sami Borg who is currently on leave of absence from the directorship of the archive.
