Editorial: Research Method Festival at Tampere

Sami Borg

The University of Tampere will host a research method festival on 30-31 August 2011. This is the second time that such a festival will be held in Finland. The first one, organized in 2009 in cooperation between the Universities of Jyväskylä and Tampere and the Tampere University of Technology, attracted 600 attendees.

The festival model has been adopted from the UK which has a longer tradition of festivals focusing on research methods and running for more than one day. The British research methods festivals are organized by bodies operating within the domain of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

In Finland as well, the focus is on culture and social science research but other sciences are represented as well. The idea is to gather experts of different fields, analysis methods and kinds of data together to disseminate their knowledge and expertise.

PhD students form the most important target group but graduate students and university and research organization personnel are by no means excluded. All attendees can look forward to two days of high-quality presentations, panels and short courses on research methods.

The data archive has participated in the planning of the event which is mainly organized by the Institute for Advanced Social Research (IASR) of the University of Tampere.
